THE 4 PATHWAYS TO EDUCATION
The 4 Pathways to Education is Gateway to Education’s framework for supporting inclusive participation, learning, and progression.
Each pathway recognises that people engage, learn, and move forward in different ways. Individuals may access one pathway or move between pathways over time, depending on their needs, interests, and goals.
Pathway 1: Access & Inclusion
This pathway focuses on removing barriers and creating welcoming, supportive entry points. It supports individuals who may be exploring participation for the first time, returning after a break, or building confidence in new environments.
Focus: Access, confidence-building, supported participation.
Pathway 2: Learning by Doing
This pathway centres on practical, hands-on learning through real tasks in real settings. Participants develop everyday skills through supported roles in retail, stock handling, organisation, and teamwork.
Focus: Skill development, routine, real-world learning.
Pathway 3: Supported Training & Progression
This pathway includes the I Can Work programme, with Go Do It forming the in-house work practice strand. Together, they provide structured training alongside real-world learning and progression support.
Focus: Structured training, capability, progression.
Pathway 4: Education & Community Connection
This pathway includes education and literacy initiatives such as Read to Grow, with Gift a Book as the public-facing campaign. It reflects Gateway to Education’s roots in education while supporting inclusion through access to learning resources.
Focus: Education, connection, community impact.
